UF-242 - Indian River Rec Biological and Agricultural Research
Building Number: 7321 - OFFICE/LAB BUILDING
Project Description: The Indian River Research and Education Center (IRREC) were established just after World War II with construction of Research Bldg #7309. This building is 5,550 sq ft. and has 16 offices, six laboratories and currently houses research and extension programs across a broad range of scientific disciplines including aquatic toxicology, genetics, horticulture, and environmental engineering. This structure is now over fifty years old and in serous disrepair. Additionally, the floor plan and internal design is not commensurate with the needs of modern laboratory research and instrumentation. A 1200 sq ft. portable trailer is adjacent to Bldg. #7309 to handle overflow of research and extension activities. Two fifty-year-old greenhouses are also appended to the east side of Bldg #7309 along with a single 25-year-old Quonset hut greenhouse, which is also in severe disrepair. Truly, this patchwork facility is a mess. The proposed new facility would accommodate our expanding research and teaching endeavors and provide IRREC with a top quality facility, which is needed to attract the best graduate students and faculty to the University of Florida.
