Air Potato Round-Up

UF continues to participate in the City of Gainesville’s Great Air Potato Round-up. The Campus Conservation Areas of President’s Park, Bat-house Woods and Bartram-Carr Woods have been clean up sites for the last five years. Last year Bivens Rim Forest was added, due to evidence of recent air-potato colonization. The 2009 harvest was much smaller than previous years, due to past collection efforts and the University’s hiring of a private contractor to treat these areas for all invasive exotic plants. Hopefully, the small number of potatoes collected over the last three years is an indication of some success at eradicating these invasive exotics. The volunteer’s efforts, along with the University’s long-term commitment to proper management of its Conservation Areas, will hopefully lead to an air-potato free campus in the near future.
